The education of John Stuart Mill was directed by his father's intense plans. By the age of eight, he read Aesop, Xenophon, and Herodotus in original Greek, and started Lucian, Diogenes Laërtius, Isocrates and Plato, as well as Latin, algebra, and Euclidian geometry. By the age of ten, he could read Plato and Demosthenes with ease. By twelve, he began Scholastic logic and Aristotle’s logical treatises in the original. At thirteen, he started on economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo.
Whereas, on any given day, a young dog might want some toys, some companions, a bit of a run around, a bit of exploration, something to eat, some attention and affection, and a good pooh. Then a nice sleep, ready to do it all again.
